Hong Kong Futures Exchange to List 37 MSCI Asia-Pacific Futures & Options Contracts

Hong Kong Futures Exchange has signed a major licensing agreement with MSCI to list 37 MSCI Asia-Pacific equity index futures & options contracts in Hong Kong.

The listing will be under Hong Kong Futures Exchange, a subsidiary of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX). The introduction of the MSCI Asia-Pacific equity index futures & options contracts is subjected to regulatory approvals and market conditions.
Currently, MSCI Asia Ex-Japan Index futures is already traded on Hong Kong Futures Exchange. In 2019, MSCI and HKEX announced the planned launch of MSCI China A Index futures, allowing international investors to manage their A-share equity exposure.

MSCI Inc is a leading provider of investment decision support tools and MSCI’s equity indexes are tracked by more than $13 trillion (31st Dec 2019) of assets worldwide. In 1969, Capital International created stock indexes to track global stock markets. In 1986, Morgan Stanley bought the licensing rights to the indexes, and rebranded to become Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) indexes. In 2007, as part of Morgan Stanley’s divestment plan, MSCI went publicly listed on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Today, it has a market capitalization of $26.2 billion (27th May 2020).
MSCI is one of the major indexes tracked by global investors alongside S&P, Dow Jones and FTSE.
From SGX to HKEX
With the announcement, the license to Singapore Exchange (SGX) for all other MSCI indexes will expire in early 2021 (February). MSCI Singapore futures and options remain listed.
SGX share price fell 11.62% on 27th May 2020 (Monday), after the announcement. SGX is listed on Singapore Exchange and has a market capitalization of $6.6 billion while HKEX, listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange, has a market capitalization of $44.61 billion.
