Top private equity firm KKR with $510 billion AUM (Assets under Management) has appointed Ming Lu as KKR Executive Chairman APAC and Hiro Hirano as Deputy Executive Chairman APAC (Remains as Head of Japan, steps down as Co-Head of Private Equity APAC), Gaurav Trehan appointed as sole Head of Private Equity APAC (Remains as Head of India), with Ashish Shastry (Head of Southeast Asia) & Jaka Prasetya (Southeast Asia Partner) appointed as KKR Advisors. Co-founded in 1976 by first cousins George Roberts and Henry Kravis together with Jerome Kohlberg, KKR has evolved from a U.S.-focused private equity firm to a global financial services enterprise that invests across many alternative asset classes in addition to private equity, including leveraged and alternative credit, infrastructure, real estate, growth equity, impact, core, and energy. KKR Asia Leadership Team Profile – New Appointments
Ming Lu
Ming Lu (Hong Kong) joined KKR in 2006. He is the Head of Asia Pacific at KKR Asia Limited and is a Partner of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. Mr. Lu currently serves as a member of the KKR Asian Private Equity Investment Committee, KKR Asian Portfolio Management Committee and the Firm’s Investment Management and Distribution Committee. Mr. Lu has played a significant role in private equity investments across Asia Pacific. Since 2018, he has been playing a leadership role in KKR Asia’s growth and expansion, including serving as a member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Committee and Asian Real Estate Investment Committee. He was previously a Partner at CCMP Capital Asia (formerly J.P. Morgan Partners Asia). At JPMP Asia, Mr. Lu was responsible for investments in the automotive, consumer and industrial sectors in Korea, China, Japan, Australia and South East Asia. Prior to joining JPMP Asia in 1999, Mr. Lu was President of Asia Pacific at Lucas Varity, a leading global automotive component supplier. From 1993 to 1997, Mr. Lu worked for Kraft Foods International Inc. From 1985 to 1993, he worked for CITIC, the largest direct investment firm in China. Mr. Lu received a B.A. in Economics from Wuhan University of Hydroelectrical Engineering in China and an M.B.A. from University of Leuven in Belgium.
Hiro Hirano
Hirofumi Hirano (Tokyo) joined KKR in 2013 and is a Partner and CEO of KKR Japan. He serves on the KKR Asia Private Equity Investment Committee and the KKR Asia Portfolio Management Committee. At KKR, he has been involved with investments including PHC Holdings (formerly Panasonic Healthcare), AlphaTheta (formerly Pioneer DJ), Marelli Holdings (formerly Calsonic Kansei), Koki Holdings (formerly Hitachi Koki), Kokusai Electric (formerly Hitachi Kokusai Electric), Seiyu Holdings, and LOGISTEED (formerly Hitachi Transport System). Prior to joining KKR, Mr. Hirano worked at AlixPartners as the Japan representative and head of financial services in Asia. From 1999 to 2006, Mr. Hirano led the principal investment arm of Nikko Cordial Group (now known as SMBC Nikko Securities) and became chairman of Nikko Principal Investments. Mr. Hirano graduated from Keio University and holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
Gaurav Trehan
Gaurav Trehan (Mumbai) joined KKR in 2020 and is a Partner and Chief Executive Officer for KKR India. Prior to joining KKR, he spent more than fifteen years with TPG Capital Asia and was most recently a partner in its India office. He has led and executed private equity transactions across a diverse range of sectors in India from financial services to retail and healthcare. Prior to joining TPG, he worked in the mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring department of Morgan Stanley with a focus on the technology sector. Mr. Trehan holds a BS in mathematics/applied science and economics from UCLA.
Ashish Shastry
Ashish Shastry (Singapore) joined KKR in 2016 as a Partner and serves as the Co-Head of Private Equity for KKR Asia Pacific, and the Head of Southeast Asia. Prior to joining KKR, Mr. Shastry served as a managing partner of Northstar Group for five years, which at the time managed over $2 billion in private equity and venture capital funds with a focus on Southeast Asia. Prior to joining Northstar, he worked at TPG Capital for thirteen years, ultimately running its Southeast Asia business. Mr. Shastry also previously worked as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers in New York. He currently serves or has previously served on the boards of Goodpack, PropertyGuru, Voyager Innovations (parent company of Maya Bank), Bank BTPN, Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings, Parkway Holdings and Parkway Trust Management (manager of Parkway Life REIT). Mr. Shastry graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. degree in economics (with honors) and currently serves on the advisory board of the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies.
Jaka Prasetya
Jaka Prasetya (Singapore) joined KKR in 2014 and is a Partner on the Private Equity team in Southeast Asia. Prior to joining KKR, he founded Leafgreen Capital Partners to provide mezzanine and structured growth funding for mid-cap companies in the region. Mr. Prasetya was previously chief executive officer of Singapore-listed United Fiber System and worked in the investment banking groups at UBS, Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank. He holds a B.Eng from the Institut Teknologi Bandung in Indonesia and an M.B.A. from MIT Sloan School of Management.
