18th August 2023 | Hong Kong
Singapore Exchange (SGX) has announced the launch of Asia’s first Structured Certificates with trading to start on 30th August 2023, with the first listing being Alibaba Group Structured Certificate with yield enhancement and auto-call feature issued by Societe Generale and distributed by UOB & UOB Kay Hian. SGX: “Structured Certificates are 3rd-party issued financial instruments designed to meet the specific needs of investors such as yield enhancements and growth payoffs. Commonly traded in Europe, the returns of these products are defined by their payoff profiles that are dependent on the performance of an underlying asset such as a single stock or equity index. With the introduction of these certificates on SGX, Specified Investment Products (SIP)-certified investors will have a wider range of options to manage their portfolios on exchange, including trading in a rising, falling or rangebound market. Investors will have new ways to trade Asian underlying assets on SGX beyond the existing broad suite of direct stocks, ETFs and leveraged products.” On Alibaba Group Structured Certificates: “The inaugural issue of Structured Certificates is a yield enhancement product linked to Alibaba Group Holding (9988.HK) and is designed with an autocall feature. This product provides investors with the opportunity to earn distributions but with potential for early redemption. Societe Generale is the issuer and UOB and UOB Kay Hian are the primary distributors.” See below for more info.

Structured Certificates:
- Structured products based on an underlying asset (such as a single stock or equity index) and contain derivative components.
- Issued by third party financial institutions, usually investment banks.
- Listed and traded on SGX-ST.
- Some examples of Structured Certificates include Yield Enhancement and Participation certificates which offer investors choices depending on their market expectations, investment goals and risk profile.
Structured Certificates on SGX are not capital protected and investors bear the risk of the issuer defaulting, which may entail a partial or total loss of the invested capital. Care must be taken to thoroughly understand the identity and creditworthiness of the issuer and, the features and risks of each certificate before investing in them.
