The Hong Kong Securities & Futures Commission (SFC) has issued a warning of fake whatsapp text messages on investment recommendations by SFC CEO Julia Leung. Hong Kong SFC: “The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) today urges the public to beware of instant text messages impersonating the SFC’s Chief Executive Officer. The SFC received a report from a member of the public who received text messages on WhatsApp purportedly from the SFC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ms Julia Leung. These text messages contained investment recommendations. The SFC wishes to stress that these instant text messages are fraudulent and has reported the case to the Police. The SFC reminds the public to be cautious regarding imposter scams perpetrated via instant text messages and social media. The SFC also urges the public to refrain from sending money or personal information if requested to do so by any persons claiming to be SFC staff. Members of the public should contact the SFC by email ([email protected]) in case of doubt.” On 18th January 2024, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) had also issued an alert of a fake interview video with HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue on investment, clarifying all related content & remarks are all fake. 23rd January 2024 – The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued an alert of a fake interview video with HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue on investment, clarifying all related content & remarks are all fake. Announcement: “The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) today (18 January) urged members of the public to remain vigilant against an online video purported to be a media interview with Mr Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the HKMA, on an investment item. The HKMA clarified that the related content and remarks are all fake. The public should disregard any information disseminated on suspicious websites or social media pages. The incident has been reported to Police for follow up.”
