The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision has approved the update of guidelines to include climate changes & digitalisation of finance in the 2024 April 24th & 25th meeting in Basel Switzerland, which was attended by around 220 central bankers & financial regulators. The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) is the primary global standard setter for the prudential regulation of banks and provides a forum for regular cooperation on banking supervisory matters. Its 45 members comprise central banks and bank supervisors from 28 jurisdictions. Announcement (25/4/24): “This publication sets out the revised Core Principles for effective banking supervision (“Core Principles”). The revised Core Principles were endorsed by banking supervisors at the 23rd International Conference of Banking Supervisors held in Basel, Switzerland, on 24-25 April 2024. The Core Principles are the de facto minimum standards for the sound prudential regulation and supervision of banks and banking systems. They are universally applicable and accommodate a range of banking systems and a broad spectrum of banks. The Core Principles are used by supervisors to assess the effectiveness of their regulatory and supervisory frameworks. They are also used by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank as part of the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) to evaluate the effectiveness of countries’ banking supervisory systems and practices. The revised Core Principles standard is effective immediately. The revised text has been incorporated into the consolidated Basel Framework.”
