The annual scholarship programme has been launched to honour Laura M Cha, recognising her considerable contribution to the development of capital markets in Hong Kong, Mainland China and globally over her distinguished career, most recently as HKEX Chairman.  Mrs Cha has played a major role in the growth of Hong Kong’s and Mainland China’s financial markets, including the introduction of H-Shares and the development of the Connect programmes, supporting ever greater connectivity and access to the region for investors and corporates alike.  She has also been a long-term advocate of corporates taking an active role in their communities, including overseeing the establishment of the HKEX Foundation, which has donated more than HK$440 million to charitable projects since it was established in 2020.  The Laura M Cha Capital Markets Scholarship will be awarded each year to an individual or individuals looking to advance their postgraduate studies in finance at CUHK Business School. HKEX will contribute HK$200,000 to the annual scholarship fund, for a period of six years. The scholarship programme, which is expected to launch later this year, will be administered by CUHK Business School, and it is envisaged that a secondment or project work with HKEX will be arranged as part of the programme. This new scholarship programme, which will be funded by the Group, complements the annual university scholarships and research funding grants that the HKEX Foundation already runs as part of its charitable work, supporting students and academics in Hong Kong.”  In April 2024, Hong Kong Exchange (HKEX) appointed ex-KPMG APAC Chairman Carlson Tong as Chairman succeeding Laura Cha.

Hong Kong Exchange Reports $1.52 Billion Profit for 2023 with Market Value at $39 Billion, Bonnie Chan Yiting to Succeed Nicholas Aguzin as HKEX Chief Executive on 1st March 2024

29th February 2024 – Hong Kong Exchange (HKEX) has reported $1.52 billion profit for 2023 with current market value of $39 billion (29/2/24).  Nicolas Aguzin, HKEX CEO:   “HKEX delivered a strong set of 2023 full-year results, fuelled by notable growth in its derivatives, fixed-income and currencies business. Despite the persistent challenging global backdrop and softer Cash Market, we are pleased to be reporting our second-best revenue and other income, and profits, on record, with profit attributable to shareholders for 2023 up 18 per cent.  Excellent strategic progress complemented the Group’s financial performance, with delivery of new milestones in the Connect programme, including the launch of Swap Connect and HKEX Synapse; the opening of new Group offices in New York and London, better supporting our customers on-the-ground across time-zones; and the rollout of new enhancements to HKEX’s listing franchise, including Chapter 18C and the launch of FINI. A particular highlight this year, has been the success of the Group’s continued product diversification focus and market microstructure enhancements, which have been instrumental in driving new daily trading records in 2023 for HKEX’s equity derivatives, RMB Currency Futures, OTC Clear and ETP markets.  Looking ahead, whilst the macroeconomic and geopolitical environment remains turbulent, we are cautiously optimistic that, as sentiment improves, we are well placed to capitalise on the global pivot to Asia, on Hong Kong’s unique role as an East-West superconnector, on our unrivalled China advantage and on the megatrends, such as sustainability, that are shaping capital markets around the world.” More info below:

15th December 2023 – The Board of Directors (the “Board”) of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (“HKEX”) today announces that Mr Aguzin, Chief Executive of HKEX, has informed the Board that he will not seek reappointment at the end of his current contract in May 2024.

  • The Board would like to express its gratitude to Mr Aguzin for his contribution and leadership over the last two and a half years against a particularly challenging macro backdrop, shaped by Covid and weak global markets. During his tenure, Mr Aguzin has overseen the delivery of a number of significant strategic initiatives, led efforts to promote HKEX internationally, opened new offices in New York and London and helped to deliver and enhance a series of products and platforms, including the growth in our derivatives and ETF markets. • The Board believes that these appointments provide HKEX with broad and deep expertise in the most senior executive positions within the organisation. Ms Chan, Mr Yiu and Ms Lau will together form a powerful team, leading the business as it continues to build its competitiveness and execute its strategy to Connect China and the World, Connect Capital with Opportunities and Connect Today with Tomorrow.

A formal announcement under Rule 13.51(2) of the Rules Governing the Listing of Securities on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited relating to the above changes will be made when they take effect.
