Singapore has appointed Lawrence Wong as Singapore 4th Prime Minister on 15th May 2024, succeeding Singapore 3rd Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong who remains in Government as Senior Minister. In 2024 April, Lee Hsien Loong announced to step down as Prime Minister on 15th May 2024 after 20 years since his appointment in 2004 (12/8/04), and announced the appointment of Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong as Singapore 4th Prime Minister with Lee Hsien Loong to remain in Government as Senior Minister. Lee Hsien Loong is the son of Singapore 1st Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (1959 to 1990). Singapore 2nd Prime Minister is Goh Ghok Tong (1990 to 2004). Singapore is a leading financial centre in Asia with GDP of $466 billion and has more than 5.9 million population. Singapore Prime Minister’s Office (15/4/24): “Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will relinquish his office on 15 May 2024. He will formally advise the President to appoint Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Mr Lawrence Wong to succeed him. DPM Wong has the unanimous support of the PAP MPs. Mr Lee Hsien Loong has been Singapore’s Prime Minister since 2004.
- Mr Lee is the Secretary-General of the People’s Action Party (PAP). He led PAP to four consecutive Singapore General Elections victories in 2006, 2011, 2015 and 2020. He was first elected Member of Parliament (MP) in 1984, and has been re-elected eight times, most recently as an MP for the Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency.
- Mr Lee also chairs GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, and the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council, an international panel that provides strategic direction for Singapore’s Research and Development efforts.
- As Prime Minister, he launched SkillsFuture to support Singaporeans in embracing lifelong learning and skills, and the Smart Nation initiative to use technology to create a future of better living, more opportunities and stronger communities.
- Before becoming Prime Minister, Mr Lee had held various Ministerial appointments, including being Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Finance, Minister for Trade and Industry and Second Minister for Defence. He was concurrently the Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore from 1998 until 2004.
- Before joining politics, Mr Lee had served in the Singapore Armed Forces, retiring as a Brigadier-General.
- Mr Lee graduated with a B.A. in Mathematics and a Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge. He was later a Mason Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, receiving a Master in Public Administration.
- Mr Lee was born on 10 February 1952. He married Dr Wong Ming Yang in 1978, and was widowed in 1982. He remarried Ho Ching in 1985. He has one daughter and three sons.
- Mr Lee enjoys reading, photography, walking, listening to classical music, and computer programming.
Mr Lawrence Wong is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance.
- He also is the Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Chairman of Singapore Economic Development Board’s International Advisory Council, Deputy Chairman of the GIC Board, Chairman of GIC’s Investment Strategies Committee and a member of the Future Economy Council, the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council and the National Research Foundation Board.
- In addition, he contributes to the labour movement as Advisor to the Union of Power and Gas Employees, and the Building Construction and Timber Industries Employees’ Union.
- Mr Wong is a Member of Parliament for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament in May 2011. He has held positions in the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Communications and Information, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, the Ministry of National Development, and the Ministry of Education. He also co-chaired the Multi-Ministry Taskforce on COVID-19 from 2020 – 2023, which oversaw the Singapore Government’s response to the pandemic.
- Prior to entering politics, Mr Wong was a civil servant. He was previously the Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority and the Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
- Mr Wong was educated at Tanjong Katong Secondary School and Victoria Junior College. He obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.
