Australia surfwear Billabong founder Gordon Merchant will be paying $33 million in total taxes (A$49.9 million) to the Australian Tax Office in a Australia court ruling. Gordon Merchant had relied on accounting firm EY tax advice in 2014 & 2015 to use capital loss against anticipated capital gain with sale of shares in Plantic under Merchant Group (controlled by Gordon Merchant). Separately, Gordon Merchant has filed lawsuit against EY and EY Private Tax Leader Ian Burgess.
