Singapore MAS Appoints 2nd Minister for Finance Chee Hong Tat as MAS Deputy Chairman, MAS Chairman is Gan Kim Yong

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has announced the appointment Singapore Minister for Transport & Second Minister for Finance Chee Hong Tat as MAS Deputy Chairman. Singapore MAS (29/7/24): “The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced today that Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance, will be appointed Deputy Chairman of the MAS Board of Directors for the period 23 August 2024 to 31 May 2027. Mr Chee was appointed to the MAS Board on 1 June 2024.” In 2024 May, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced the appointment of the new MAS Chairman Gan Kim Yong for 2 years (15th May 2024 to 31st May 2026), succeeding Lawrence Wong who has been appointed as Singapore Prime Minister. Singapore MAS (13/5/24): “The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced today that Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Trade and Industry, will be appointed Chairman of the MAS Board of Directors for the period 15 May 2024 to 31 May 2026. Mr Gan has been Deputy Chairman of MAS since 8 July 2023. He replaces Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Lawrence Wong, who has served as Chairman of MAS since 8 July 2023. Mr Wong had previously served as Deputy Chairman of MAS from 1 June 2021 to 7 July 2023, and was a member of the MAS Board from 10 June 2011 to 29 August 2016. Mr Wong will relinquish his positions as Chairman and member of the MAS Board from 15 May 2024.”

Chee Hong Tat, Minister for Transport & Second Minister for Finance – Mr Chee Hong Tat was appointed Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance on 18 January 2024. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament for the Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in 2015 and was re-elected during the 2020 General Elections. He also serves as a member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore Board from 1 June 2024 and an Adviser to the Board of Directors of Business China. On 12 July 2023, Mr Chee was appointed Acting Minister for Transport, while concurrently serving as Senior Minister of State for Finance. He was appointed Senior Minister of State for Transport on 27 July 2020 and took up a concurrent appointment as Senior Minister of State for Finance on 13 June 2022. He was also Deputy Secretary-General at the National Trades Union Congress from May 2021 to June 2022. Prior to this, Mr Chee had served as Senior Minister of State for Health, Communications & Information, Education, Trade & Industry and Foreign Affairs. Mr Chee was born in 1973 and is married with four children. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science (Highest Honours) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts (Highest Honours) in Economics. He obtained his Masters of Business Administration from Adelaide University in 2006. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Trades Union Congress in April 2021 and was conferred an Honorary Fellow by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore in January 2023.

14th May 2024 – The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has announced the appointment of the new MAS Chairman Gan Kim Yong for 2 years (15th May 2024 to 31st May 2026), succeeding Lawrence Wong who has been appointed as Singapore Prime Minister. Singapore MAS (13/5/24): “The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced today that Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Trade and Industry, will be appointed Chairman of the MAS Board of Directors for the period 15 May 2024 to 31 May 2026. Mr Gan has been Deputy Chairman of MAS since 8 July 2023. He replaces Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Lawrence Wong, who has served as Chairman of MAS since 8 July 2023. Mr Gan Kim Yong was appointed Minister for Trade and Industry on 15 May 2021. One of his key priorities at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) is to identify new opportunities for growth in support of Singapore’s continued economic development.
- Prior to MTI, Mr Gan was Minister for Health from May 2011 to May 2021. Between January 2020 and May 2021, Mr Gan co-chaired the Multi-Ministry Taskforce, where he directed and coordinated Singapore’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also helmed the Ministerial Committee on Ageing to drive the formulation and implementation of ageing policies in Singapore, looking into matters such as active ageing, senior friendly infrastructure, and quality aged care.
- Mr Gan oversaw efforts to drive Healthcare 2020, a masterplan outlining the Government’s strategy to ensure accessibility, quality and affordability of healthcare in Singapore. Under his leadership, the Ministry of Health invested significantly in building new healthcare infrastructure like acute and community hospitals and expanded the polyclinic and General Practitioner networks. To better prepare Singaporeans for their long-term care needs, enhancements to long-term care financing measures including the Pioneer Generation Package, the Merdeka Generation Package and CareShield Life were launched in 2014, 2019 and 2020 respectively. MediShield Life, a universal medical insurance that covers all Singaporeans for life regardless of health status, was also introduced in 2015.
- From April 2008 to May 2011, Mr Gan served as the Minister for Manpower. He led the ministry’s efforts to minimise mass retrenchments through concerted efforts with industry partners during the economic recession in 2009. He also played an instrumental role in the development of manpower policies to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing business environment, and in building a Continuing Education and Training system for a globally competitive workforce.
- His other previous appointments include Acting Minister for Manpower (April 2008 to March 2009), Minister of State for Education (October 2005 to March 2008) and Minister of State for Manpower (October 2005 to March 2008).
- Mr Gan entered politics in 2001 and was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Holland-Bukit Panjang Group Representation Constituency (GRC). In 2006, he was re-elected as MP to serve in the Chua Chu Kang Single Member Constituency. He was re-elected as MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC at the 2011, 2015 and 2020 General Elections.
- Mr Gan started his career in the Singapore Civil Service at the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Home Affairs. In 1989, he left the civil service for the private sector and joined NatSteel Ltd as a manager for Corporate Planning. He was promoted to Executive Vice President of NatSteel and CEO of NatSteel Resorts International and NatSteel Properties in 1996. In 2005, he became the CEO and President of NatSteel.
- Mr Gan was awarded the Overseas Merit Scholarship to read Engineering in Cambridge University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree (honours) in 1981. Mr Gan subsequently obtained his master’s degree in Engineering from Cambridge University in 1985.
