Facebook parent Meta has agreed to pay $1.4 billion to the state of Texas in United States to resolve lawsuit of Meta illegally collecting biometric data in Texas without consent using facial-recognition technology. Texas 2009 biometric privacy law allows damages of $25,000 per violation. In 2020, Meta had paid $650 million to settle a biometric privacy class action in Illinois state (United States). Meta has a current market value of $1.23 trillion, and reported $39 billion net income in 2023. Facebook was founded in 2004 (TheFacebook) by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, and renamed to Facebook in 2005 (bought domain facebook.com for $200,000). Facebook IPO in 2012, and renamed the company to Meta in 2021.
