An Australia court has ordered Singapore citizen Dr Wong Yew Choy to repay $26 million (AUD 38.7 million) to Star Gold Coast Casino for gambling loans, losses, interest & indemnity costs. Dr Wong had incurred AUD 43 million debt over a few days in 2018, and instructed his bank not to honour a cheque payment. Dr Wong had complained to the casino Chief Operating Officer (COO) of mistakes made by baccarat dealers resulting in losses, and was informed by the COO to continue to gamble without needing to pay the losses. The COO issued a letter of apology but did not mention waiving debt. The casino sued Dr Wong in Singapore in 2019 and lost the case as Singapore law disallows recovery of gambling debts except under certain conditions. Star Gold Coast is owned by the Star Entertainment Group ($866 million market value), which owns casinos in Sydney Darling Harbour, The Star Gold Coast and the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre.
