Billionaire & Hedge Fund Founder George Soros Family Office Soros Fund Management to Close Hong Kong Office with Asia Investments to be Managed from New York & London Offices, Had Opened Hong Kong Office in 2010

9th November 2024 | Hong Kong

Billionaire & hedge fund founder George Soros family office Soros Fund Management is closing the Hong Kong office, with Asia investments to be managed from New York & London offices.  Soros Fund Management LLC (SFM) is the principal asset manager for the Open Society Foundations (Open Society).  SFM is a family office and as such does not seek, solicit or accept investors that are not eligible family clients of SFM.  In 2024 March, George Soros (Age 94) Open Society Foundations has announced the appointment of Binaifer Nowrojee as the new President succeeding Mark Malloch-Brown in June 2024. In 2023, George Soros (Age 93) transferred control of his $25 billion assets including Soros Fund Management to his then 37-year-old son Alexander Soros.  In 2017, George Soros had transferred $18 billion from his family office to his charity group Open Society Foundations.  George Soros is born in 1930 in Hungary, went to UK in 1947 and studied in London School of Economics.  After working for a few banks, George Soros setup his first hedge fund Double Eagle and used the profits to setup his 2nd hedge fund Soros Fund Management, and renaming Double Eagle as Quantum Fund.  George Soros is known as “the man who broke the bank of England in 1992”, shorting British Pound and making a profit of $1 billion.   George Soros is currently a resident of New York (United States).  George Soros has 2 children, Alexander Soros and Gregory Soros.  In 2012, Alexander Soros had setup Alexander Soros Foundation to promote social justice and human rights.  Soros Fund Management LLC (SFM) is the principal asset manager for the Open Society Foundations (Open Society) – the world’s largest private funders of independent groups working for justice, democratic governance, and human rights. SFM was originally founded by George Soros in 1970, and its financial success enabled Mr. Soros to create Open Society to pursue his philanthropic vision. Today, SFM’s mission is to protect and grow Open Society’s resources. SFM invests globally in a wide range of strategies and asset classes, including public equities, fixed income, commodities, foreign exchange, alternative assets and private equity.  SFM is a family office and as such does not seek, solicit or accept investors that are not eligible family clients of SFM.  As a family office, we are prudent investors with a unique vantage point and flexibility to respond to market conditions and evolve our approach. We are initially focused on two themes, climate transition and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), that we believe pose material risk and opportunity for us as investors and the companies in which we invest. We evaluate additional themes where they can have a material effect on our portfolio. When assessing a sustainability theme, we develop a perspective and an approach to integrate the theme into our investment process via bottom-up analysis and partnership within the investment team. In August 2020, SFM committed to transition to a net zero greenhouse gas emissions portfolio as rapidly as possible, and no later than 2040.

16th March 2024 – Billionaire & hedge fund founder George Soros (Age 94) Open Society Foundations has announced the appointment of Binaifer Nowrojee as the new President succeeding Mark Malloch-Brown in June 2024.

Alex Soros, Chair of OSF: “She embodies the spirit of OSF, past and present. I am confident she will ably lead OSF into the challenging next phase of our work.  When I established the Open Society Foundations, I wanted them to be truly global,” added George Soros, founder of OSF. “At the outset, that was merely an aspiration. But now I feel that this ambition has been fulfilled with Binaifer Nowrojee as president of the Foundations, supported by an international team. I am grateful to Mark Malloch-Brown for all he has done, and for laying the groundwork for us to reach this goal.”

Malloch-Brown: “I am proud of what we have done to prepare the organization for a future very different from its past,” stated.  It is one where all the apparent certainties of the international liberal order have been turned on their head and we have had to reinvent how we promote human rights and open society.”

Nowrojee: “Heading this remarkable institution, the world’s largest funder of human rights, at a time when justice and compassion are under siege, is by far the biggest, and best, challenge I have ever faced. I am proud to be president and stand ready to join my colleagues in the fight.”

11th March 2024 – The Open Society Foundations (OSF) today announced Binaifer Nowrojee has been appointed the new president with Mark Malloch-Brown stepping down from his role in June 2024.   The OSF Board of Directors unanimously voted to appoint Binaifer Nowrojee, who currently serves as the vice president of Programs. Nowrojee brings over three decades of experience and dedication to her new role. Previously, she has held a range of senior positions at OSF, including East Africa Foundation director, regional director for Asia Pacific, and vice president for Organizational Transformation. Prior to her tenure at Open Society, Nowrojee also served as legal counsel at Human Rights Watch and as a staff attorney at the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights. She has worked extensively on prosecuting sexual violence under international law and testified as an expert witness at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Nowrojee holds a juris doctor from Columbia Law School and a master of laws degree from Harvard Law School, underscoring her strong academic foundation and expertise in international law and human rights.  In conjunction with the Board of Directors, Malloch-Brown decided that the timing was right to hand over the leadership after having largely completed the transformation of the Open Society Foundations.
