India ex-largest $22 billion EdTech BYJU’S founder Raveendran has been accused of using United States businessman William R Hailer to buyout creditors with $1.2 billion loans for ownership of education software company Epic!, with William R Hailer submitting a testimony he had been used as a pawn.  In 2024 August, United States court has denied request to block $19 million of sponsorship payment to India cricket board by BYJU’S CEO’s brother & ex-director Riju Ravindran, which allowed the dismissal of India bankruptcy proceedings with the payment now cleared.  GLAS Trust Company representing $1.2 billion creditors of BYJU’S had argued in court the $19 million paid should be used to pay the creditors.  Earlier in 2024 August, A United States court judge had ordered India ex-largest EdTech (Education Technology) company BYJU’S ($22 billion valuation) CEO’s brother & ex-Director Riju Ravindran to pay $10,000 a day penalty until he helps to locate the missing $533 million.  In 2024 July, an India court has allowed bankruptcy proceedings against India ex-largest EdTech BYJU’S (Education Technology, $22 billion valuation), with an interim resolution professional appointed to replace founder Raveendran.  In 2024 May, BYJU’S CEO’s brother Riju Ravindran is facing penalties in United States court for hiding $533 million from lenders with the Judge calling his testimony dishonest.  In April 2024, BYJU’S founder Raveendran personal fortune has dropped from $2.1 billion to near zero (Forbes).  In 2023 December, Raveendran has been reported to pledged 2 houses to borrow $12 million to pay staff salaries, and reviewing plan to sell United States Epic business with offers around $400 million.  In November 2023, BYJU’S reported net loss of $287 million for 2022 (31/3/23).  In October 2023, the creditor of BYJU’S began the process to takeover control of Singapore subsidiary Great Learning, bought by BYJU’S in 2021 for $600 million.  In June 2023, BYJU’S filed a lawsuit against lender Redwood in New York for violating $1.2 billion of Term B Loan (TLB) in payment demands, with lenders representing 85% of $1.2 billion loan responded the lawsuit has no merit and payments had defaulted for 9 months.  8th June 2023 – A group of ad hoc term loan lenders, who collectively own more than 85% of BYJU’S $1.2 billion term loan, today issued the following statement in response to a recent lawsuit filed by BYJU’S in the Supreme Court of the State of New York County of New York.

The lender group, comprised of 21 highly respected global institutional investors, has sought to work constructively with the company over the past nine months to cure its numerous defaults and will continue to do so in good faith. However, in the event BYJU’S intentionally remains in default, the lender group reserves all rights available to it to enforce the credit agreement.”  Houlihan Lokey serves as financial advisor to the term loan lender group and Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP, and Shearman & Sterling LLP are serving as legal advisors.  In 2023 May, BYJU’S had been alleged to hide or moved $500 million from United States non-operating entity BYJU’S Alpha Inc, with the lenders owed $1.2 billion filing the lawsuit in Delaware (United States).  The lawsuit was filed by by Glas Trust Company and Timothy R. Pohl.
