“Anytime a chapter ends, you find yourself thinking about how it began. I got quite a laugh dusting off my rejection letter from Goldman Sachs nearly three decades ago and contemplating that my journey at the firm almost never got started at all.
But as my time at this special place comes to a close, I’m profoundly grateful that I didn’t give up and that the firm reconsidered its rejection and for the journey (and lifelong friendships) that resulted. I want to thank David M. Solomon, Lloyd Blankfein, Hank Paulson, and the many other leaders and partners I was fortunate to serve alongside. And I want to thank my more than forty thousand colleagues around the world who challenged me, motivated me, and always made me better – I’m proud of all we have done together and for what we have delivered for our clients and stakeholders.
My biggest thanks is owed to my family – my wife Susan and my four children – their support and love made this journey possible.
I’m energized for my next chapter – whatever that may be. But for now, I’m feeling grateful for an incredible journey at an incredible place. And to anyone reading this who might be dealing with a failure or a setback or a rejection – don’t lose hope and don’t give up – your journey might just not have started yet.”
